If you’re one of the millions of Americans struggling with urinary incontinence, you’re not alone. Over 50% of men and women in America over age 65 deal with incontinence in one form or another.

This condition can cause embarrassment, frustration, and fear since it can be difficult to predict when a problem may arise. At Urological Associates, our board-certified urologists help men and women in Charlottesville, Virginia, struggling with urinary incontinence find lasting relief.

For some of our patients, sacral neuromodulation is the key to restoring bladder control and living a normal, incontinence-free life. Take a moment to learn more about this treatment and what it can do for you.

What is sacral neuromodulation?

Sacral neuromodulation is a treatment option for certain types of urinary incontinence that works by gently stimulating the nerves that control your bladder. Researchers believe some incontinence develops when the sacral nerves at the base of your spine don’t function properly and fail to send the right signals from the bladder to your brain.

The stimulation delivered through sacral neuromodulation helps restore control of your bladder by improving communication between your brain and the bladder. The amount of stimulation your nerves receive stays in your hands, helping keep you in control of your bladder.

At Urological Associates, we’re pleased to offer both Axonics and InterStim sacral neuromodulation therapy, both of which are very small implants. They fit under your skin, keeping your treatment private, and because they’re reversible, you can discontinue treatment when you choose.

Before starting sacral neuromodulation, you receive a test treatment. This allows you to see what it’s like and whether you believe sacral neuromodulation will work for you.

Does sacral neuromodulation help all types of incontinence?

Not everyone with urinary incontinence is a good candidate for sacral neuromodulation. Your Urological Associates provider reviews your medical history and discusses your symptoms before recommending specific treatments for incontinence.

Both InterStim and Axonics sacral neuromodulation therapy may be recommended if:

  • You have overactive bladder (sudden and frequent urge to urinate)
  • You have problems with urinary retention (inability to urinate)
  • Your incontinence has not responded to more conservative treatments

Our patients find that sacral neuromodulation is a great alternative to medications, which can cause unpleasant side effects and aren’t as effective. And because your Urological Associates provider tests your body’s response to the treatment first, you have a good idea about whether it will give you the results you need.
